General information

Infused with 1960s French style, Amansara is a gateway to the monumental remnants of the Khmer Empire, saturated with history and legend. Once a residence for guests of the King, Amansara is a masterpiece of 1960s New Khmer architecture – an unabashedly modern style. A careful and sensitive restoration brought the building back to its former glory. Gardens and canopy of mature trees create an introspective atmosphere, continued in the Suites, which open onto private courtyards and ponds. Custom itineraries lead guests intuitively towards less-explored destinations – cycling through crowd- free ruins, meditating amid ancient forest or cruising to the floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake.

This tranquil home offers a multitude of relaxing opportunities within its private garden enclave: a sultry curved slate swimming pool surrounded by bamboo and taupe cushioned loungers with a shaded pergola for alfresco delights; the Dining Room, previously the screening room of King Sihanouk, is both dramatic and outstanding with a cavernous seven-meter high ceiling and a well-stocked walk-in wine cellar. The Roof Garden, surrounded and shaded by trees, with mushroom hued cushions on low seating, is the ideal venue for relaxing by candlelight with pre-prandial drinks or, invigorating yoga sessions with the rising sun. The Spa, which has four immaculate treatment rooms in dark wood and fresh white, focuses strongly on therapeutic Cambodian techniques using organic products and faces an exceptional Angkor-inspired 43m sandstone bas-relief set above a green hand tiled reflective pond.

In depth

LIVING

Finished in pale terrazzo and timber, Amansara’s Suites offer a combined bedroom and living area which steps down into a light-filled bathroom with an island bathtub. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to a private garden courtyard with sun loungers, a reflection pond and, in 12 suites, a private plunge pool. Sandstone reliefs reference the famed ruins of Angkor temples just minutes away.

All of Amansara’s Suites offer a contemporary bedroom and living area. Contemporary suites living area opens to a small private courtyard, Courtyard Suites have a large garden courtyard and pool Suites are equipped with private plunge pool in large garden courtyard.

DINING

Set beneath a soaring ceiling, the circular Dining Room serves Khmer and western cuisine made from local, seasonal produce.

Amansara’s sleek circular Restaurant offers Cambodian-centered cuisine under soaring ceilings or outdoors at pergola-shaded tables by the pool. The daily changing menus focus on simple flavors, using organic produce direct from the market and local suppliers. For a unique experience, private dining is available at the resort’s rustic Khmer house at Angkor, where meals are prepared over charcoal to the sounds and sights of village life.

SPA

Embracing holistic Khmer traditions, spa treatments are complemented by a yoga session at sunrise.

Running parallel to a reflection pool, the approach to the spa sets the tone for what lies within: a tranquil sanctuary, where therapies make use of traditional Cambodian techniques and natural products. Four treatment rooms, each equipped with a steam bath and shower, are complemented by a yoga space and the resort’s central pool, as well as a hidden 25-metre lap pool.
