Siem Reap / Ho Chi Minh City
10 days - 9 nights
Siem Reap (Angkor Complex), Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi Tunnels, Vinh Hy Bay
Siem Reap is a sleepy backwater serving as a gateway to the ancient capital of Angkor. It is hard to believe that at its peak in the 12th century, this was one of the most advanced civilizations in the world and home to more than 1 million inhabitants.
Upon arrival inside the immigration hall, look for our Representative holding the paging board with your name on. Our representative will assist to fast track your visa application and then escort you to meet your local guide. You will then be transferred to your hotel downtown. Your guide will give a brief orientation of some major landmarks en route to the Amansara, your luxury home for the next three nights. The remainder of the day is free at leisure as you adjust to the local pace. Enjoy a Khmer-inspired dinner at your gracious resort.
Set in a lush garden enclosure, Amansara glows with the nuances of its sixties conception. Commissioned by Norodum Sihanouk in 1962, it is, today, a peaceful contemporary and warm sanctuary. Just a mere remork and driver ride from an ancient civilization gripped in the roots of the jungle is Angkor, regional capital and powerhouse of the 12th century. The culmination of five centuries of Khmer civilization, Angkor is living testimony to Cambodia’s ancestry as well as the foundation of their deeply philosophical identity. Housing over 100 stone temples it reveals a religious kingdom of the most significant remaining Khmer architecture in the world.
If your family rises early with ease, consider catching sunrise at Angkor Wat. It is certainly one of the most unique places in the world for sunrise but be forewarned, you won’t be alone! Return to Amansara for breakfast.
After breakfast, travel by three-wheeled tuk tuk to visit the intricately carved Khmer ruins at Angkor Wat – one of the most important religious monuments in the world. The temple still displays hundreds of fine carvings of Apsara and Hindu mythology in its bas relief. Stroll around the massive hallways and discover small shrines still in use today by the local people.
After this visit, you will be transferred to a local family’s home. Your host for lunch today is a well- educated Cambodian national, whose wife will prepare a delicious Khmer meal for you. This scholar in Cambodian history and archaeology is knowledgeable about Khmer arts, culture and history. He currently works for the Apsara Authority and Angkor Temple Conservations Institution and has an expertise in and passion for the temples of Angkor. Enjoy a cozy home-cooked meal with the scholar and his family at his simple yet comfortable home. This is a great opportunity to interact with a local family and share life experiences and learn more about the rich history of Cambodia and how the Khmer Empire flourished in the 12th and 13th century.
After lunch, depart by bike for Angkor Thom, the ancient royal city of the Khmer Empire with its centre piece; ride an elephant from the Southgate of Angkor Thom to Bayon. Then continue to explore the mysterious Royal city of Angkor Thom.
Continue your ride to Ta Prohm, considered to be one of Angkor’s jewels with is overgrown fig trees, giving a haunting yet exotic atmosphere. The magnificent roots of the trees have merged itself over the centuries with the temple’s huge stone blocks, emphasizing a ‘forgotten city’ feeling. Round off the day with iced drinks over sunset from the terrace of Sras Srang, the former Royal bathing lake of the Khmer Kings. Return to Siem Reap at leisure and reflect on the wonders of Angkor over dinner at your resort.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Wat Damnak, one of Siem Reap's most beautiful pagodas. The French colonial architecture reflects its history and serene-looking Buddhist statues positioned around the spacious grounds create a tranquil atmosphere. Bring candles and incense sticks to the pagoda to participate in a private blessing ceremony, performed by the resident monks. Sit on a hand-woven mat while the monks chant ritual blessings and sprinkle holy water (believed to offer good luck) before tying a sacred thread around your wrist. The monks will offer you a small keepsake to remind you of this special moment.
You will then be transferred to the floating village on the great Tonle Sap Lake. Your journey begins by witnessing the beautiful rice paddies and the daily lifestyles of the local people before arriving at the boat dock. Here you will board a quaint local boat which will take you to the amazing floating village for your unique kayaking experience. On arrival, you will be amazed as you kayak gently through this floating village where you will be welcomed by warming smiles from the humble Cambodian people who live on this fantastic lake. You continue to enjoy kayaking until you reach the end of the village and there you will be welcomed by your local host, where you will stop for a local lunch in a beautiful setting. After beautiful lunch, you continue to gently kayak to the exotic mangroves in high water season while during low water season you will kayak along the Tonle Sap Lake seeing rare birds in this tranquil setting giving you a once in a lifetime experience leaving you with ever lasting memories before transferring back by boat where your air conditioned vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Siem Reap town. Return to The Amansara at leisure and enjoy dinner at the resort.
At your leisure in the morning OR you can continue your exploration with a visit to Preah Khan. Originally a Buddhist monastery and school, this temple was dedicated to Jayavarman VII's father. After discovery, the temple was mainly left as it was found without renovation. Left out of most itineraries, the temple is one of the most enjoyable to explore within the Angkor Complex. It still is home to elaborate carvings and a stunning library with round columns. Return to your resort late morning to relax and freshen up.
At 11:20am, you will be transferred to the airport for the early afternoon flight to Ho Chi Minh City. With more than 8 million inhabitants, Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) is the country’s commercial center. Despite the fast paced daily life, the city retains its connections to the past. Upon arrival at Ho Chi Minh airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel downtown.
Late afternoon, take an orientation tour for an overview of Saigon on the back of an old style vintage Vespa. The ride will pass by the city’s historic landmarks including the People’s Committee building, Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, Central Post Office, the Opera House, and the China Town.
Continue your Vespa trip to discover what this thriving and exciting metropolis can offer in terms of street food, all from the back of a vintage Vespa scooter. Stops include dinner and drinks at Saigon's best authentic street food, and a Vietnamese-style coffee shop. Drive to District 4 to taste various snail dishes which are very popular in Saigon. Then it’s back to District 3 to sample a southern Vietnamese specialty – Banh Xeo (rice pancake with pork and prawns). Finally, head to a local Vietnamese style coffee shop and enjoy a local coffee.
Note: Guests ride as passenger behind an experienced driver. The standard of local street food shop is very basic. You will sample several foods during this tour, we recommend saving your appetite to savor the experience.
After breakfast, enjoy a two hour drive northwest of Saigon, through urbanized areas and typical lush southern Vietnamese countryside, to the famous Cu Chi tunnels. This network of tunnels, which stretched for over 200km, became legendary during the 1960s. The Cu Chi tunnels played a vital part in the U.S.-Viet Nam War in that they allowed the Viet Cong to control a large rural area only 30 to 40 km from Saigon. At its height, the tunnel system stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border. The network, parts of which were several levels deep, included innumerable trap doors, specifically constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapons factories, field hospitals, command center and kitchens. Today the remaining tunnels have become a major tourist attraction giving the visitor a glimpse of the underground life and strategy during the war. Visit the underground villages with a VC veteran who used to live there, to better understand the tunnels’ history, life in the tunnels and the Vietnamese’s resilience during the combats. Interact with the veteran and find out about his experience living in the subterranean hamlets where lack of air, food and water can made life unbearable. Your guide will be there to translate the veteran’s experiences. Drive back to Saigon.
Enjoy lunch at the Hoi An Restaurant. The restaurant is located on 2 floors and the interior is full of the antique had crafted furnishings of Vietnam. The shuttered panels that divide the dining areas upstairs lend privacy but at the same time an open feel to a room. Dine on a variety of Vietnamese cuisine with a hint of European influences.
After lunch, spend the remainder of the day strolling through the colorful Ben Thanh market with your guide before returning to your hotel OR transfer back to your hotel for relaxation. Dinner is on your own.
