General information

Set on a large garden estate, Amantaka is housed in graceful French colonial buildings in the UNESCO protected town of Luang Prabang. Airy and elegant throughout, the décor and furnishings reflect the town’s French colonial history. A centuries-old spiritual sanctuary, Luang Prabang is a place of serenity, beauty and escape on the peninsula between the lush banks of the khan and Mekong Rivers.

Amantaka derives its name from the word ‘aman’, the Sanskrit word for ‘peace’, and from Tipitaka, meaning ‘the teaching of the Buddha’ in Theravada scholastic literature. The resort is located just south of Mount Phousi in the center of the picturesque Luang Prabang peninsula, within walking distance of the many boutiques, bakeries and restaurants along the main street. Amantaka is also close to the banks of the Mekong River and to Luang Prabang’s fabled night market. The resort provides access to the town’s many historic sites including more than 30 golden-spired temples and the former Royal Palace, a classic example of the town’s unique blend of 19th and 20th century French colonial and Lao architectural traditions.

DINING

Using time-honored ingredients and techniques, Amantaka’s menu showcases small dishes of Laotian and international foods that are served together to make up a traditional Lao meal. Locally grown produce features prominently. Meals are enjoyed in the airy Dining Room or at the Pool Terrace – or shared at a Lao barbecue, complete with a dancing troupe in traditional costumes.

Try the delectable varieties of Laos traditional food including mok, meat or vegetables steamed in banana leaf with coriander egg and coconut milk or find the right balance of ingredients in your pho, a rice noodle breakfast soup. Led by local produce, Laos cuisine can be customized to suit the tastes of all Amantaka guests. At the lounge bar, house specialties, the Makkam and the Laojito are Laotain aperitifs of choice. Tamarind juice, vodka, lime, ginger and lemongrass flavor the Makkam, while the Laojito is a cooling mojito enriched with local favorites, basil and lemongrass.

Embark on a culinary experience and visit the morning market with Amantaka’s chef to learn about local produce and pick out choice ingredients. Morning and evening cooking classes take place on the resort’s organic farm, where the chef reveals the culinary secrets of local Laos cuisine specialties.

SPA

A place of quiet contemplation, Amantaka’s spa offers treatments ranging from massages and facials to scrubs and wraps, incorporating Southeast Asian techniques with Aman Spa’s own range of organic products. Four spa suites, a steam room, sauna and hot and cold plunge pools provide all the necessary space for unwinding and rejuvenating the body and soul.

The traditional Lao chanting ceremony, Baci is a way to reintegrate harmony into busy lives. In Amantaka’s signature Baci treatment, the ritual is followed by a cleansing exfoliation and a soothing body massage.

A rhythmic, oil-free treatment, traditional Lao massage has been passed down through generations. Performed over loose, comfortable clothing, a series of gentle stretches open the body to enhance mobility while deep pressure-point stimulation eases tension.

The healing benefits of local herbs are infused deep into the muscles during the herbal poultice treatment, melting away tension. Amantaka’s signature massage works holistically to penetrate deep into the body through multiple senses to soothe and revitalize it.
