The 137 Pillars House story really began in 1856 when an adventurous bunch of Englishmen established the Borneo Company Limited which extracted the islands natural resources and exported them home to industrializing Britain. 137 Pillars housed the Chiang Mai office and a legacy was born.
It’s modern day tale to glory began when the owners sought a brief but peaceful respite from Bangkok. The Northern town of Chiang Mai came to mind for its laid-back pace. The house was stumbled upon while exploring the town, searching for a retirement property – the owners were immediately charmed and set out to make it their own.
The Lanna style Thai house was a curious fixture and through research they discovered the true and fascinating story of this house and the British based Borneo Company and knew their family could share a slice of Thai history with the world. The house was run-down and ailing but the owners had a vision they were determined to fulfill; it was destined to be an intimate and elegant retreat for guests to unwind from the stress of their busy lives.

137 Pillars House suites are havens of tranquility with every imaginable convenience – large terraces with expansive daybeds and our signature planters rattan rocking chairs – high ceilings with large super king size beds, en-suite dressing room with walk-in closet and views to the tropical gardens. Large bathrooms with separate indoor/outdoor garden showers, and Victorian baths make these suites unique in every sense.
Rajah Brooke Suites (70sqm) available in twin or king size configuration, ideal for family or friends traveling together. They are complete with all signature Victorian bath and luxury amenities. East Borneo Suites (75sqm) have large vintage tiled verandas extending over tropical gardens. D.F. Macfie Suites (70 sqm) with its understated elegance and modern amenities is designed to accommodate a family of four or those with a preference for extra living space. The attached air-conditioned vintage-tiled conservatory has the option of being enclosed or open air. It is furnished with a plush daybed, a rattan planter’s chair and cane shades for privacy and can be converted in to a bedroom. William Bain Terrace Suites (100sqm) overlook the Old Baan Borneo House with a large terrace that offers a panoramic view that can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Louis Leonowens Pool Suites (135sqm) are complete with a butler service and a private outdoor plunge pool which adjoins to a spacious living room.

All suites are equipped with complimentary high-speed internet, air conditioning, climate control and ceiling fan, luxurious 400-thread count bed linen, a Sealy Posturepedic Premier Ultra Plush mattress, oversized daybed on the balcony, separate indoor and outdoor showers. personal in-room music system with iPod connectivity and charger, 32” flat screen LCD television with satellite/cable channels, in-room safe, personal mini-bar with espresso coffee machine and kettle.

The Dining Room offers a harvest table breakfast, lunch or dinner in an al fresco or restaurant setting. Enjoy hand crafter classic and contemporary cocktails at Jack Bain’s Bar and savor the epicurean art of gourmet “farm to kitchen” cuisine at Palette. For the finest Thai and Lanna cuisine with organic ingredients join us at the Dining Room and partake in afternoon tea at the gardens of the parlor of Baan Borneo House. Private dining is available for those whom wish to enjoy delights from our menus in the comfort of their suite.
