In depth

LIVING

Set on a two and a half-hectare site with 200 meters of frontage on the fabled Perfume River, Azerai La Residence, Hue has 122 rooms and suites.
The colonial mansion at the heart of the hotel was built in 1930 as part of the residence of the French Resident Superior. The mansion’s distinctive facade, its long horizontal lines and nautical flourishes are hallmarks of the streamline modern school of art deco architecture.
Its two complementary wings, built in 2005, are contemporary in design yet echo elements of art deco aesthetics and embrace an expansive tropical garden and salt-water swimming pool.

Rooms in the West Wing were renovated in late 2018, many with balconies looking out to the gardens and Perfume River. Rooms in the East Wing provide river and garden views and Colonial Rooms are located in the mansion. Colonial Suites and the Resident’s Suite are located in the mansion, some with private balconies and views that reach over the gardens to the Perfume River. Whilst all rooms boast every modern convenience, the atmosphere of a bygone age is captured through sensitive use of local materials, art deco inspired design and careful attention to detail.

DINING

Oozing with 1920s elegance, Le Gouverneur Bar greets visitors with refreshing airiness and comfortable, cushioned armchairs crafted from dark wood in the traditional Vietnamese style. Natural light pours into the crescent-shaped space from floor-to-ceiling windows, opening up enticing views of the hotel’s tropical gardens and the Perfume River. When evening arrives, tall lamps and subtle lighting cast Le Gouverneur’s curved polished-wood bar and lofty ceilings in an inviting glow. French-colonial style doors open onto a raised terrace with tables overlooking the illuminated gardens. The sounds of a last boat motoring down the river and the calls of wild birds filter through to guests sipping sundowners in the evening air.

In a country that does not typically serve meals in courses, the carefully prepared dishes at Le Parfum Restaurant reveal an unconventional yet delightful culinary approach. For those who want to delve further into Vietnam’s varied culinary traditions, there is an entire Vietnamese discovery selection showcasing elaborate regional delicacies. Even in the Continental corner of the menu, where our chef showcases his global repertoire, local references abound: pan fried French Pigeon with sautéed chanterelle mushroom, grilled half smoked Australian Wagyu Striploin and pumpkin soup laced with Phan Thiet vanilla. In a six-course degustation menu, our chef combines French cooking with Vietnamese ingredients and accompanying wines. The restaurant seats 178 and includes dining on a terrace that takes in views of the river and the walls of the Citadel on the north bank.
